SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team will start its spring season at the Wyoming Desert Classic at Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. This year's 24-team tournament will have single rounds on Monday through Wednesday.

The Hornets played in four tournaments during the fall but have not competed since the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Oct. 27-29. Sacramento State was even par or better in eight of its final nine rounds and concluded the early portion of its season with a scoring average of 284.3 strokes per round.

Individually,
Mason Benbrook led the team at 70.78 strokes per round. Four of Benbrook's nine rounds were under par and an additional three rounds were even. His low of 68 came in the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational where he tied for fifth.

This week's tournament features three teams ranked in the top 100 led by New Mexico which is 19
th in the Clippd Scoreboard national rankings. Joining the Lobos are Colorado (46
th) and Oral Roberts (75
th). Sacramento State is ranked 144
th.

The Hornets have made two previous appearances at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The team placed 13
th in 2023 and tied for 10
th in 2024.
Gabriel Smith and
Zach Matzke were the only Hornets which are in this year's lineup and also competed in 2024.

The Last Time at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate
Sacramento State tied for 10
th place after shooting 296-300-292-878. The Hornets were led in the first round by Jeffrey Perry and
Luke Dugger who each shot 70.
Gabriel Smith had the low mark in the second round at 73 while
Zach Mate shot 69 in the final round. Mate had the top overall finish, tying for 20
th at 71-76-69-216.
