PALM DESERT, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team remained in second place after shooting 5-under par as a team during the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Classic Club. The Hornets will enter the final round on Wednesday 15 strokes back of No. 46 Colorado and two strokes ahead of Wyoming.
 
Zach Matzke paced the team on Tuesday, shooting a 4-under par round of 68. Matzke was 1-under through his first nine holes with birdies on the par-3 second and par-4 fifth along with one bogeys. He returned to even with a bogey on No. 11 before ripping off four birdies over his next six holes. His two-day total 71-68-139 ties him for seventh place overall and is three strokes back of the individual leader.
 
Max Thomas is also tied for seventh as he followed on opening-round 68 with a 71 on Tuesday. Thomas was 1-over through his first nine holes with a birdie and two bogeys. He moved back under par with birdies on the par-3 12^th and par-4 13^th before ending his round with six-straight pars.
 
Gabriel Smith matched Thomas' second-round score and is tied for 25^th overall. Smith was 2-under at the midway point of his round with birdies on Nos. 1, 4, 8 and 9 and bogeys on Nos. 2 and 7. His back nine featured pars on eight holes and a bogey on the par-3 17^th.
 
Jai Bahl and Mason Benbrook each shot 73 on Tuesday. Bahl had two birdies and five bogeys before an eagle on the 564-yard, par-5 15^th. Benbrook posted two birdies and three bogeys to end at 1-over.
