SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State third-year sophomore
Jules Colchico has been named The Big West Rookie of the Week on Monday following a memorable performance in the Hornets' first-ever conference victory against Cal State Bakersfield at home last Saturday.
Colchico becomes the first Sacramento State women's soccer player to be named the league's rookie of the week and the third Hornet honored by the conference office this season following offensive player of the week honors bestowed upon
Mia Jackson (Aug. 17) and
Candace Ching (Aug. 31) earlier this year.
It has been a season two years in the making for the Clayton, Calif., native who made her collegiate debut in the regular season opener against Pacific after injuries sidelined her for the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. Since then, she tallied her first collegiate points with assists against UC Irvine (Sept. 23) and Long Beach State (Oct. 3).
However, on Saturday, it was time for Colchico to finally break into the scoring column as her first career goal put the Hornets' ahead in the 31st minute. Teammate
Lexi Schroeder started the sequence with a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a defender, but the loose ball fell right to the feet of Colchico, who snuck a bouncing liner through traffic and under the outstretched Bakersfield goalkeeper.
The goal — which was also her first career game-winner — made Colchico the eighth different Sacramento State goalscorer this season and put the Hornets on the scoreboard first for the ninth time in 13 matches overall. She is one of three players to score their first career goals this season and one of four to tally their first career points.
Colchico and the Hornets continue Big West play with a pair of matches this week, heading to La Jolla, Calif., to take on UC San Diego on Wednesday (Oct. 14) at 7 p.m., before coming home to host league co-leader Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m.
