WOMEN’S SOCCER KEEPS IT CLEAN FOR INAUGURAL BIG WEST WIN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jules Colchico scored her first collegiate goal to stake Sacramento State to the early lead and co-captain Lexi Schroeder finished with three points on the day as the Hornets picked up their first-ever Big West victory with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday evening at Hornet Soccer Field.

The historic win snapped a seven-match winless streak for Sacramento State, which won for the first time since a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Southern Utah back on Aug. 27, and wrapped up its second shutout of the year. Following draws in three of their last four league matches, the Hornets improved to 5-3-5 overall and 1-1-3 in The Big West.

The Roadrunners had their winless streak extended to nine consecutive contests, falling to 1-12-1 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Beset by injuries in her first two years on the roster since signing with the program prior to the 2024 campaign, Colchico finally made her collegiate debut in the regular season opener and posted her first two career points with assists against UC Irvine (Sept. 23) and Long Beach State (Oct. 3). However, Saturday saw the third-year Hornet finally get into the scoring column, staking her team to a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

Schroeder started the sequence by dribbling across the top of the 18 toward the center of the field where she was able to unleash a shot that was blocked in the box by a Bakersfield defender. The loose ball then fell to the feet of Colchico, who snuck a bouncing low-liner through traffic and underneath the outstretched Roadrunner goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

With the goal, Colchico became the eighth different Sacramento State goal scorer this season while the Hornets scored first for the ninth time in 13 matches overall.

The score stayed that way through the remainder of a first half that saw the home side hold a 12-4 shot advantage. It was then Schroeder who doubled the Sacramento State lead in the 71st minute, netting her second goal of the season.

Schroeder intercepted a ball near midfield and began her march, weaving her way through the Roadrunner defense. She was met at the top of the box by a defender before faking inside and taking a touch to her left, sending a left-footed screamer into the right-side netting for a 2-0 advantage.

Thanks to her three points, Schroeder notched her second match with three points this season after she scored a goal and had an assist in the season opener against Pacific on Aug. 13 and moved into a tie for second on the team with seven points in the process.

She is one of three Hornets with at least three points in a match in 2026, joining teammate Mia Jackson, who did it twice against Pacific (Aug. 13) and Long Beach State (Oct. 3), and Candace Ching, who accomplished the feat against both Southern Utah (Aug. 27) and Saint Mary's (Sept. 10)

With Bakersfield now chasing two goals, goalkeeper Hayley Hartsburg made two saves 30 seconds apart in the two minutes following the goal as the Roadrunners pressed ahead, and Jaiden Gore had, perhaps, one of the best looks of the day for Cal State Bakersfield in the 86th minute, but put her attempt from close-in over the top of the bar.

Overall, Sacramento State finished with a 21-11 shot advantage — the third consecutive match that it has finished in double figures in that category — and put 12 of those attempts on frame compared to just two for the Roadrunners. Led by Colchico's match-high five attempts, the team's 21 shots were one shy of its season high of 22 set at Fresno State on Sept. 3, while the 12 shots on goal were also the second-most this year behind the 15 on frame in the same match against the Bulldogs.

The Hornets have now had two matches with 20-or-more shots this season — the first time that has happened since 2017 when they put up 27 attempts against North Dakota and 20 at Weber State that year. Thanks to Saturday's two scores, Sacramento State now has 20 goals on the season — the most since they finished with 28 goals in 2019.

After playing only one match this week, the Hornets return to the grind with a pair of Big West contests next week, traveling to Southern California to take on UC San Diego (Oct. 14) in La Jolla, Calif., before returning home to host Cal State Fullerton in the first half of a doubleheader on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m.
