LA JOLLA, Calif. — Sacramento State junior goalkeeper Hayley Hartsburg finished with a career-high 10 saves on the night against a barrage of shots from host UC San Diego, but it wasn't enough to keep them off the scoreboard as the Tritons posted a 3-0 victory over the Hornets on Wednesday night in La Jolla, Calif.
Sacramento State fell to 5-4-5 overall and 1-2-3 in Big West play, while UCSD improved to 7-3-4 overall and 3-1-2 in conference with the win.
The Hornet defense was tested throughout the night with the Tritons recording 32 shots and putting 19 of those on frame — including a 23-4 shot advantage in the second half.
Hartsburg's 10 saves in 75 minutes of play — making five in each half — surpassed her previous career high of eight set at Long Beach State back on Oct. 4. They are the most saves by a Sacramento State keeper since Izzy Palmatier finished with 11 in a home match against Hawai'i on Sept. 4 of last season.
Sophomore Delaney Timmons, making her first appearance in goal since suffering an injury in a win at Nevada back on Aug. 23, entered in relief in the 75th minute and finished off the night with five saves of her own. Leah Gimenez also pushed one off the line in the 56th minute and the left post kept one out just before the Tritons' final goal of the night.
UC San Diego opened the scoring on Olivia Shih's third goal of the year in the 15th minute and added a second right before the break when Ava Tibor put the home side up 2-0 in the 43rd. The Tritons then capped the scoring on Tibor's second of the match in the 71st.
Jules Colchico and Tierra Pickell each had two shots apiece — one each on frame — for the Hornets while newcomer Sadie Stoll put one on frame in the closing minutes of the match.
Sacramento State returns home to host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m. It is the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team, which hosts UC Irvine at 4 p.m.
