SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After 21 years of coaching at Sacramento State (eight as the head coach), head men's tennis coach
Kevin Kurtz announced his retirement today. His final day will be Aug. 11.
"After 21 incredible years at Sacramento State, I have made the decision to retire to spend more time with my family," Kurtz said. "It has been an honor and a privilege to lead the men's tennis program and work with so many talented student-athletes, a dedicated coaching staff, and supportive colleagues. I'm proud of what we've accomplished together and grateful for the lifelong relationships formed through this journey. Sacramento State will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to supporting the program in new ways as I begin this next chapter."
This past season marked Kurtz's 21st with the program, and eighth as the Hornets' head coach. He spent 13 seasons (2005-17) as the assistant coach before being elevated to head coach in 2018. During his 21-year coaching tenure, Kurtz helped guide the Hornets to a 123-47 mark in the Big Sky Conference, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, seven conference tournament crowns, and seven Big Sky regular season championships.

Kurtz Notables
• Sacramento State has received a combined 59 all-conference selections during his coaching tenure, including 38 first team selections and seven MVP awards.
• Named the Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2024 after guiding the team to a 17-7 overall record, 7-1 conference mark, Big Sky regular season and tournament crowns, and an NCAA Tournament appearance. A program-record six Hornets were named all-Big Sky, including conference MVP Mark Keki.
• During his eight years as head coach, the men's tennis team posted the highest team GPA of all the Sacramento State men's programs on six occasions.
• Also during his head coaching tenure, Sacramento State players combined to rack up 36 Big Sky all-academic selections.
• Coached the highest ranked singles player in school history (Kiryl Harbatsiuk #16 in 2011), and the highest ranked doubles team in program history (Harbatsiuk/Anton Stryhas #16 in 2010)
• Coached Mark Keki/Mate Voros to a 20-1 doubles record in 2022 - the most wins, and top winning percentage (.952) by a doubles team in school history
• Named the 2013 ITA Northwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping guide the Hornets to Big Sky regular season and tournament crowns, as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance.
• During the 2010-11 academic year, Kurtz coached Kiryl Harbatsiuk to the program's only ITA Northwest Regional singles title, and a quarterfinal appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Tennis Championship.
• A Sacramento native, prior to his tenure with the Hornets, Kurtz led three other Sacramento-area schools to multiple conference championships - American River College, Jesuit High School and Loretto High School.
• Kurtz also graduated from Sacramento State with a communication studies degree in 2003.
