SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sacramento State received wins from
Bridgette Smith/Cailtin Volkmann and
Greta Davis/
Karlie Spohn to highlight the Hornets' first two matches of the Big West Conference Challenge on Friday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
All seven teams from the Big West Conference are at the three-day tournament hosted by Cal Poly. The Hornets play two of those days, including three matches today and three matches tomorrow. Sacramento State returns to action later this afternoon vs. CSUN at 4:30 p.m.
The Hornets opened today with a 5-0 loss at 6th-ranked Cal Poly, followed by a 3-2 loss to CSU Bakersfield. Sacramento State is 5-9 this season, and of those nine losses, three have come to teams ranked among the top 10 in the nation (Stanford and Cal are the others).
In the matchup with the Roadrunners, the Hornets were down, 2-0, but wins by Smith/Volkmann at No. 1 (21-10, 26-24) and Spohn/Davis (23-21, 21-16 at No. 3) tied things at 2-2. The outcome came down to the No. 4 court of

Mia Guevara, but the Hornets fell in three sets (18-21, 21-11, 15-7).
After this afternoon's matchup, Sacramento State will play three more times tomorrow.
