MALIBU, Calif. -- Sacramento State fell to UTEP, 4-1, and came up just short against host Pepperdine, 3-2, on the first day of the Malibu invite.
Against UTEP, the Hornets had a win from the duo of Bridgette Smith/Caitlin Volkmann (No.1), who took the match in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14.
The pair of Savannah Risley/Kate Doorn (No. 5) fell just short to UTEP in a close three-setter, 21-15, 19-21, 12-15.
In the match against Pepperdine, Ashlynn Archer/Ellie Tisko (No. 2) took down the Waves in three sets, 17-21, 21-19, 15-12. Archer/Tisko improved their record to 7-4 this season.
In their second match of the day, Risley/Doorn were dominant, defeating Pepperdine in straight sets, 21-16, 21-15.
The match against Pepperdine came down to Court 1, where Smith/Volkmann forced a third set, but came up just short, 19-21, 21-19, 11-15.
The Hornets battled inclement weather throughout both matches, facing cold temperatures, rain and wind gusts.
Sacramento State will face Morehead State tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the final match of the weekend.
