SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second consecutive week, the Sacramento State women's tennis team has moved up in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's computer rankings, entering this week's matches at No. 49 in the nation — a jump of 11 spots from last week's poll debut.
One of only two undefeated teams in this week's top 75 along with Florida Atlantic (6-0), the 7-0 Hornets break into the top 50 for the first time since 2012 and post its highest ranking since reaching No. 43 in the nation according to the Feb. 22 rankings in that same year.
Continuing the program's best start in its Division I history, Sacramento State kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 7-0 shutout of Santa Clara in its only match of the week on Saturday (Feb. 22), winning eight of the nine matches against the Broncos and posting its second shutout of the year.
The current seven-match winning streak to start the year is not only the program's best start, but the 12th winning streak of seven or more matches in the program's Division I history and the longest since the Hornets won nine straight from Feb. 10 to March 19 of last season.
This week's rankings set-up a top-50 match-up on Friday (Feb. 28) at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex as the Hornets, who are playing in their first home dual since Jan. 26 after five straight on the road, host No. 50 Cal Poly at Noon.
It is the first match against a ranked opponent since Sacramento State faced No. 10 California in last year's NCAA Tournament in Berkeley, Calif., and the first home match against a nationally ranked opponent since No. 20 Fresno State paid a visit on March 12, 2016.
