TRACK & FIELD CONCLUDES SILVER STATE INVITATIONAL WITH TWO WINS AND EIGHT TOP 10S

Hornets get victories by Fitzgerald and Davis

SPARKS, Nev. — Competing in its earliest indoor meet in school history did not seem to affect the Sacramento State track and field team as the Hornets won two individual event titles and set eight school top 10 marks during the final day of the Silver State Invitational on Saturday.

Both individual titles came from the women's team as Ava Fitzgerald won the 60-hurdles and R'kai Davis finished first in the triple jump. Fitzgerald qualified for the finals of the 60-hurdles after running 8.49 seconds in the opening round. That time seeded her second behind teammate Syniah Beverley who ran 8.47. The pair returned for the finals where Fitzgerald won in a time of 8.35 while Beverley was third in 8.45. Fitzgerald's time was just off her school record of 8.31 which was set last season. Beverley moved into fourth place in school history in her first 60H finals of her career.

Davis' best triple jump came on her fifth attempt where she traveled 40-03.25 (12.27m). The jump was 3.75 inches beyond the next closest competitor and shattered her previous best of 39-06.00.

The Hornet women ended the day by finishing second in the 4x400 relay behind the fourth-fastest time in school history. The team of Breija Stredic, Jaylin Hunter, Jayla Cigar-Dingle and Emily Giddens ran 3:44.10 for the second fastest time by a Sacramento State relay team in the last 10 seasons.

The final school top 10 for the women came from freshman Victoria Chatter who ran 7.63 in the 60-meter dash to move into 10th place in the Hornet record book.

The team had four other individuals finish among the top eighth in their respective events. Hope Gordon was fourth and Galadriel Mellion fifth in the shot put with bests of 44-10.25 and 43-01.50, respectively. In the 600, Jasayla Mariscal ran 1:36.83 to place sixth while Lilly Escorcia was seventh with a PR of 1:37.36.

The Sacramento State men had three of the top five marks in the men's triple jump. Jamar Andrews, Jr., led the trio — and finished second in the meet — with a long of 50-04.75. That distance moved him into third place in school history and makes him just the third to surpass 50-feet during and indoor triple jump. Kellan Quinley was third in the meet with a best of 46-06.75 while Michael Cherry placed fifth at 43-01.50.

Myles McFarland finished in fourth place in the 60-hurdles with a time of 8.07 in the finals. The freshman is now tied for eighth in school history in the event.

Sacramento State had a pair of top eight finishers in the 60 and both also cracked the school top 10. Gianni Miles finished in third place in the meet in 6.73 seconds which also ranks third all-time at Sacramento State. Miles, who transferred from Jessup, ran the fastest 60 by a Hornet since Andy White tied the school record of 6.70 in 2011. Jonas Petty finished seventh in the final in 6.87 seconds. Petty's fastest time, however, was in the qualifying round as he ran 6.83 which moved him into sixth place in program, history.

The men's 4x400 relay team of Tim Edwards, Jr., Curtis Reagor, McFarland and Logan Borg finished in second place in the meet with a time of 3:15.23. That mark moved the quartet into seventh place in the Hornet record book.

Borg also finished in fourth place in the 600 after running 1:20.58.

Sacramento State will have over a month away from competition until it returns to action on Jan. 16-17 at the Spokane Sports Showcase.
