SPARKS, Nev. — Emmanuel Akutey finished in first place in the men's weight throw and
Jonas Petty and
Indiana Davis posted a school top 10 marks in during the first day of the main program of the Silver State Invitational on Friday.
Akutey set his personal best with a weight throw of 52-02.50 (15.91m) to earn his first collegiate victory in the event. His mark was nearly a six-foot improvement over his long of 46-03.50 from last season.
Petty moved into ninth place in program history after running 21.81 in the 200. He led 10 Hornets in the event, including four that finished in the top 16. Petty placed 13
th overall and was immediately followed by
Curtis Reagor (21.83),
Tim Edwards, Jr. (21.88) and
Gianni Miles (22.01).
Davis finished second overall and is now tied for fourth place in school history in the women's high jump. The freshman cleared 5-07.75 and had only one miss on her way to that mark.
Chandler Miller tied for seventh place in the event while
Jessi Barry tied for ninth. Both had bests of 5-03.75 but were differentiated based on number of attempts.
The men had six other top 10 finishes during the day. Joining Akutey in the men's hammer was
Jaden Washington who had a throw of 43-06.00 to place fifth.
Eli Kaltreider placed fourth in the men's high jump with a career-high tying best of 6-08.75.
Quentin Mitchell tied for sixth (6-06.75) and
Kyree Marshall was eighth (6-04.75).
Jamar Andrews, Jr., finished in third place in the men's long jump with a best of 22-11.25.
The final top 10 finish for the men came from
Tim Edwards, Jr., who ran 49.19 in the 400 to place seventh.
The women's best showing came in the 400 where
Breija Stredic,
Emily Giddens,
Jaylin Hunter and
Jayla Cigar-Dingle each finished in the top seven in the event. Stredic led the way with a time of 56.56 to finish in third place. Giddens was one position back in 56.84 while Hunter was sixth (57.19) and Cigar-Dingle seventh (57.28).
In the field events, freshman
Charlotte Zeigermann placed eighth in the long jump with a best of 18-07.25 in her first collegiate meet. Transfer
Galadriel Mellion finished in eighth place in the women's hammer throw behind a career best of 53-03.00.
The day began with the completion of the men's heptathlon.
Blake Gross had the best finish on the team as he tallied 4,148 points to place ninth.
Cole Oliver was 11
th with 3,865 while
Brock Gross finished in 14
th with 3,558 points. All three were hindered by not recording a height in the pole vault but
Blake Gross responded with the fourth-fastest 1000m in the field in 2:48.15.
The meet will continue on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The final event of the day is scheduled to be the 4x400 relay at 3:05 p.m.
