GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women's rowing squad competed in its first race of the fall season at the Head of the American Saturday morning on Lake Natoma.

Saturday's racing took place on a three-mile course with a time trial start format. Sacramento State competed in four race categories - two entries in the Collegiate Eight (22-boat field), and one in the Collegiate Four (14-boat field), Collegiate Novice Eight (4-boat field) and Pair (32-boat field).

Crews competed in windy conditions throughout the day.

In the Collegiate Eight, high major crews (USC, Washington State, Oregon State) took up the top six spots. The Hornets were the top mid-major crew, finishing in seventh place with a time of 18:08.1. They finished ahead of 15 other boats, defeating a pair of crews from Oregon State by over five seconds. The Hornets' second varsity eight also competed, finishing 11th with a time of 18:39.0. The only mid-major schools the 2V8 finished behind were the Hornets' top boat and Portland's top boat.

In the Collegiate Novice Eight, the Hornets finished in third place with a time of 22:28.3, trailing only Santa Clara and Cal.

Sacramento State's pair of Kaylee Godwin and Mackenzie Murray was impressive, finishing fifth out of 32 entries. The duo finished with a time of 21:16.0, trailing only pairs from USC and Oregon State.

In the four, Sacramento State had a time of 22:05.8, placing eighth out of 14 entries.

The Hornets have just one remaining fall race - a home scrimmage vs. Saint Mary's/Cal Poly Humboldt on Nov. 8.
