GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four each competed on the first day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational on Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The two-day, six-team regatta features a lineup that boasts the 20th-ranked team in the nation (UCLA) as well as another currently receiving votes in the CRCA Coaches Top 20 poll (Miami). Other teams at the event are the Hornets, Tulsa, Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount.

Today's racing included a morning and afternoon session, and will be followed by a morning session on Sunday. Each race during the entire regatta features a three or four-boat field (mainly three boats).

The Hornets combined to beat Loyola Marymount on five occasions today, including once by the varsity eight, twice by the second varsity eight, and twice by the varsity four. The second varsity four placed first in its afternoon race against Tulsa.

In the morning session, each of the Hornets' four boats placed second in their respective races. The varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four competitions each saw Miami finish first, followed by the Hornets and Loyola Marymount, respectively. LMU did not race in the second varsity four.

Morning racing included lights winds that began with 3-4 mph cross tails and ended at 8 mph cross head. Sacramento State's times: varsity eight (6:46.8), second varsity eight (7:14.1), varsity four (8:04.6) and second varsity four (8:20.6).

The afternoon session, which included cross head to direct head 6-9 mph winds, included a first place finish for the second varsity four, second place finishes by the second varsity eight and varsity four, and a third from the varsity eight. Tulsa finished first in each of those races. The Hornets' second varsity four victory came with a time of 8:16.4, besting Tulsa (8:20.0).

Loyola Marymount finished behind the Hornets' second varsity eight and varsity four, but defeated the Hornets' varsity eight. Sacramento State's afternoon times - varsity eight (7:04.9), second varsity eight (7:30.9) and varsity four (8:22.9).

Tomorrow, only Sacramento State, Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount will compete. Racing begins with the varsity eight at 8:30 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight (8:50), varsity four (9:10) and second varsity four (9:30). The three teams will compete against each other the first three races. The Hornets will take on only Gonzaga in the second varsity four competition.
