CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Sacramento State competed four boats at today's UC San Diego Invitational, highlighted by the Hornets' varsity four winning both its races.
In all, Sacramento State went 5-3 in its duals today as the varsity eight was 1-2, second varsity eight 1-2, varsity four 4-0, and second varsity four 2-1. Each boat competed in one race in the afternoon, followed by another race in the afternoon.
The regatta, hosted by UC San Diego, is held at Lower Otay Lake - the home of the United States Olympic Training Center. This weekend marked the second-ever UC San Diego Invitational, and racing took place on a 2,000 meter course.
Sacramento State's varsity four posted a 7:31.32 in the morning, beating both San Diego and Saint Mary's. In the afternoon, the boat's time of 7:36.94 defeated both UC San Diego and Santa Clara.
The Hornets' varsity eight placed second in both its races, registering a 6:39.17 in the morning (behind San Diego, ahead of Saint Mary's), and a 6:44.17 in the afternoon (behind UC San Diego).
The second varsity eight recorded a 7:01.65 in the morning, and a 7:08.43 in the afternoon. The second varsity four had a first place finish in the afternoon (8:03.05), besting UC San Diego's time of 8:04.66. In the morning, the Hornets' time of 7:57.68 was second in a three-boat field.
Sacramento State has just one more regatta on the regular season schedule, and that comes next week (April 27-28) when the Hornets host the WIRA Championship at Lake Natoma. That will be the final tuneup for the American Athletic Conference Championship on May 12 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
