RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Sacramento State's pitching staff allowed just three runs over 14.0 innings, and
Lewa Day connected for two home runs to help lead the Hornets to a pair of victories in the first day of the Lance Up Invite at Funk Stadium.
Sacramento State began the day by defeating UC San Diego, 3-2, and capped things by defeating tournament host California Baptist, 5-1.
The Hornets (13-6) have now won five straight, the team's second five-game winning streak of the season. This marks the program's best 19-game start since the 2003 squad began the year 14-5. During the current winning streak, three of those five wins have come by a single run.
Day, on her birthday, combined with Bertuccio to lead the Hornets to the win over UC San Diego. Day went 4-for-4 with two runs, two homers and a pair of RBIs. The four hits tied a single-game program record, and she belted two homers in the same game for the sixth time of her illustrious career. Bertuccio (6-2) was solid in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing five hits and two runs with six strikeouts in seven innings.
Day had solo homers in the first and fifth innings, sandwiched around an
Andrea Lira sacrifice fly in the third. Besides the four hits from Day,
Gwen Ludwig, Lira,
Alexis Parish,
Samantha Parish and
Kennedy Echols also had hits.
In the nightcap, the Hornets were outhit by California Baptist, 10-4, but took advantage of four Lancer errors to score five unearned runs. Sacramento State scored three times in the first, and two more in the fifth, and that was more than enough support for Wahl (4-1) who tossed her fourth complete game.
Wahl gave up 10 hits, but stranded nine runners on base as she walked one and struck out two while throwing 101 pitches.
Alexis Parish had the rare stat line of 0-for-0 with four walks, a run and RBI. The four walks tied a single-game program record, set just three times previously. Her sister, Samantha, had two RBIs without the benefit of a hit, and Ludwig had half the Hornet hits as she finished 2-for-4. Each of the top five hitters in the Hornet lineup finished with a run scored.
Echols and
Caroline Evans had the Hornets' other hits in the game.
Sacramento State is back in action tomorrow to face Harvard (10 a.m.) and UC San Diego (3 p.m.).
