BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the 'Runner Invite, falling to CSU Bakersfield (4-1) and CSUN (3-2) on Friday at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex.
Sacramento State, which was playing its first two matches of the two-day, four-match event, dropped to 5-3 on the young season. The Hornets are back tomorrow to face UNC Wilmington at 8 a.m., and host CSU Bakersfield at noon.
In the matchup with CSU Bakersfield, the Hornets received a win at No. 2 from

Greta Davis (21-11, 21-15). The 4-1 final score wasn't nearly indicative of how close the match was as the Hornets narrowly lost at No. 1 (21-19, 21-19) and No. 3 (21-16, 21-23, 15-10).
In the afternoon contest vs. CSUN, Sacramento State picked up victories from

Ellie Tisko at No. 2 by a 21-13, 21-19 score, and
Ashlynn Archer/
Hailey Plugge at No. 5 by a 21-17, 21-10 score. Once again, the match wasn't far off a Hornet victory as Sacramento State fell by narrow scores at No. 1 (21-19, 21-16) and No. 3 (23-21, 21-15).
Of the Hornets' eight matches thus far, all have been played away from home.
