SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second time this outdoor season, the Sacramento State track and field team will split its squad at a pair of meets. The Hornet distance runners will return to the Mike Fanelli Classic while the sprinters, jumpers and throwers will all return at the Stanford Invitational. Both meets will run on Friday and Saturday (Mar. 29-30).
The Fanelli Track Classic has become one the premiere distance events in the West. This year's even will be held at Chabot College in Hawyard, Calif., due to construction at the usual SF State facility. The meet will feature 33 heats of the 1500 and 17 5Ks on Friday. On Saturday, there will be 32 heats of the 800 and eight steeplechase races. The distance races begin on Friday at 1:35 p.m. and conclude with the final 5K at 10 p.m. The Hornets return on Saturday for the 800 at 12:15 p.m. and will have their final athlete compete in the steeplechase at 6:51 p.m.
The Stanford Invitational includes the majority of the NCAA Div. I programs on the West Coast. Sacramento State's first event will be the men's hammer at 10 a.m. The first running event for the team will be the women's 100-hurdles prelims at 10:37 a.m. Action concludes for the team with the men's 20 at 4:45 p.m. On Saturday, the women's hammer gets under way at 10 a.m. and the women's 4x100 relay will be the first running event at 12:35 p.m. The women's discus (5 p.m. and men's 4x400 relays (5:35 p.m.) will be the final events.
This week will be the fourth consecutive that Sacramento State has competed outdoors. The Hornets currently have 59 student-athletes ranked among the top 10 of the Big Sky Conference. The Big Sky unveiled the preseason coaches poll on Thursday where the Hornet women were tabbed fifth and the men were seventh.
