SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Sacramento State's doubles teams of
Kalani Hayes/
Ellie Tisko (No. 1) and
Ashlynn Archer/
Hailey Plugge (No. 5) both went 3-0 in their matches to lead the Hornets to a 2-1 record on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets played a tripleheader, falling to Santa Clara (3-2) in the morning, before posting back-to-back 4-1 victories over Portland and Pacific, respectively. Sacramento State moved its overall record to 5-1, which is the team's best six-match mark in program history (2013-pres.).
Among those six overall wins are two against Portland, who the Hornets defeated last weekend in Salem, Ore., Sacramento State is not far off being 6-0 as the Hornets fell to Santa Clara, 3-2. All three losses in that match were extremely close, including a three-set defeat at No. 2.
The combination of Archer/Plugge was dominant, winning each of their three matches in straight sets. That tandem is now 5-1 this season.
Hayes/Tisko has won five straight, and improved to 5-0 at the No. 1 position in the team's lineup. The tandem beat their opponent from Santa Clara (21-17, 21-19) before winning in straight sets against Portland, and three sets vs. Pacific.
The Hornets used the same doubles lineups in all three matches today, and
Caitlin Volkmann/
Greta Davis (No. 2) and
Mia Guevara/
Karlee Soderberg (No. 3) both went 2-1 today. Guevara/Soderberg improved to 5-1 this season, while Volkmann/Davis is now 4-1.
The Hornets return to action next week in Bakersfield where the team plays four times over Friday and Saturday. That includes a matchup against CSU Bakersfield to open the tournament Friday at 8 a.m.
