SOFTBALL SPLITS IN STOCKTON, BEATS PACIFIC FOR 2ND STRAIGHT DAY

STOCKTON, Calif. -- For the second straight day, Sacramento State split a pair of games at Bill Simoni Field, defeating Pacific, 8-3, and falling to Iowa, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The first day of the tournament yesterday produced the same results. Sacramento State went 2-2 at the two-day, three-team round robin, falling twice to Iowa and beating Pacific twice. The Hornets moved their record to 18-10 overall, 12-8 away from home, and 7-2 on an opponent's home field.

The Hornets played six games this week (four against Power Five schools), and put together a 3-3 record. That includes a 3-2 win at ninth-ranked Stanford on Wednesday. Sacramento State has just three more tuneups before Big Sky Conference play begins on March 29-30 at Northern Colorado.

Right fielder Haley Hanson came up huge today, combining to go 5-for-7 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI. She is now 15-for-16 in stolen base opportunities, and the 15 bags are one shy of the Hornet Div. I era single-season record (16), currently held by Nene Alas (2016). In addition, Hanson's 38 career stolen bases are just two shy of the Div. I era record of 40, held by Hilary Johnson (2005-08)

Speaking of school records, Lewa Day scored twice in the win over Pacific, and increased her career run total to 140, which ties the program mark, originally set by All-American Lindy Winkler from 2003-06. Winkler had her number retired by Sacramento State.

In the win over Pacific, Day cranked her ninth home run of the season, and the Hornets' Nos. 1-5 hitters combined to go 8-for-17 with seven runs scored and four RBIs. Day was the catalyst, going 1-for-2 with a walk, a successful suicide squeeze, home run, two runs scored and a pair or RBIs. Her home run in the fifth inning gave the Hornets a 3-2 lead, which Pacific would match in the bottom half of the frame.

However, the Hornets dropped a five spot in the sixth, taking advantage of four hits and three Tiger errors to put things away. That was more than enough run support for right-hander Marissa Bertuccio, who improved to 9-3 while tossing her 10th complete game of the season. In seven innings, she allowed just four hits with two earned runs and seven strikeouts. Bertuccio has now thrown a complete game in 10 of her 11 starts, and her ERA sits at 1.81.

Hanson finished 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, Gwen Ludwig was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, and Day 1-for-2 with two runs, walk and a pair of RBIs. Andrea Lira, Caroline Evans and both Parish sisters each had a hit to round out the Hornets' 10-hit attack.

The game against Iowa saw the Hawkeyes snap a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Iowa starter Jalen Adams allowed seven hits and one run with just two strikeouts over seven innings. Hanson was the lone Hornet with a multiple hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

Hanson, Ludwig, Lira and Alexis Parish hit safely in both games.

Today concluded a season-high stretch of 11 straight games away from home. The Hornets are back at Shea Stadium for a home doubleheader vs. Saint Mary's on Tuesday at 1 p.m., followed by a matchup at Cal (single game) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
