SOFTBALL CONCLUDES 9-GAME ROAD TRIP WITH 4-3 LOSS TO MICHIGAN

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sacramento State scored three time in the fifth inning to tie at 3-3, but Michigan's Maddie Erickson hit a solo homer in the sixth, and the Wolverines beat the Hornets, 4-3, on Saturday morning at UCSB Campus Diamond.

Today's game concluded a stretch of nine straight games away from home, and the Hornets finished the trip 5-4. Sacramento State is now 7-5 overall, and will return home to play six games at next week's Capital Classic from Thursday to Sunday.

Sacramento State split a pair of games with Michigan (8-4), as the Hornets beat their Big 10 Conference opponent yesterday by a 6-1 score. The Hornets' schedule has been formidable. In the last six games, Sacramento State has played four games against Big 10 opponents, one game against Conference USA, and one vs. the Mountain West.

In today's game, all four Michigan runs came via the long ball, including a solo homer from Ella Stephenson in the third, and a two-run blast from Lilly Vallimont in the fourth. The Vallimont homer gave Michigan a 3-0 lead.

Sacramento State stormed back in the fifth with three runs scored after two outs had been recorded. That included a Lexie Webb pinch hit RBI-single scoring Jada Walker, and a two-run single from Andrea Lira scoring Gwen Ludwig and Kennedy Echols. The Hornets had the bases loaded when the final out of the inning was recored. Freshman Malissa George was walked intentionally to load the bases.

The Hornets finished with five hits, and three of those knocks came in the fifth. Lira finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Echols was 2-for-2 with a run. Webb had the Hornets' other hit. Echols now has a five-game hitting streak while Lira has hit in four straight.

The Hornets will play four straight days at the Capital Classic, beginning Thursday vs. BYU (11 a.m.) and UC Davis (1:30 p.m.).
