SOFTBALL BEATS BYU IN THE MORNING; HAS AFTERNOON GAME CANCELED BECAUSE OF RAIN

SACRAMENTO -- Haley Hanson's two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning gave the Hornets the lead for good, and Marissa Bertuccio tossed a complete game to lead Sacramento State to a 4-3 win over BYU.

The game was the first of the four-day Capital Classic at Shea Stadium, and Sacramento State had its afternoon game vs. UC Davis canceled because of rain. The two teams will attempt to make up the game at a later date. The second game of the day was completed - a 5-3 BYU victory over UC Davis.

There is rain the forecast the next three days, casting doubt on the remainder of the tournament, especially Friday and Saturday.

But the Hornets (8-5) completed this morning's game, and secured an impressive victory against BYU of the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars entered the game with a 12-3 record, and had won seven of their last eight games (four via mercy rule). That included a 19-3 win over Cal Poly last weekend.

Sacramento State has now played seven consecutive games against schools from either the Big 10, Big 12, Conference USA or Mountain West conferences. Despite the formidable schedule, the Hornets are 8-5, including a 3-1 mark at home.

In today's game, Bertuccio (3-1) threw well against a lineup that was hitting .362 with 16 home runs. The right-hander tossed a complete game while allowing the Cougars seven hits and three runs with eight strikeouts. She threw 122 pitches, and stranded eight runners aboard.

Hanson factored into three of the Hornets' four runs. That included the Hornets scoring a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Hanson led off the inning with a walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Gwen Ludwig, and came home to score on a wild pitch. The Hornets tied things at 1-1 in the second when Samantha Parish doubled home Andrea Lira.

After BYU scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, Hanson's two-run single in the bottom half of the inning scored both the Parish sisters. Bertuccio held BYU scoreless the final three innings, stranding multiple runners aboard in both the fifth and sixth.

Center fielder Kennedy Echols made a huge play in the sixth, throwing out the potential tying runner at the plate after BYU had singled.

The Hornets finished with five hits, two of which came from Alexis Parish who was 2-for-3 with a run. The other hits came from Ludwig, Hanson and Samantha Parish.

Weather permitting, the rest of the Capital Classic schedule remains the same as of now.
