SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Right-hander
Marissa Bertuccio threw a complete game, allowing just five hits and one run, to lead Sacramento State to a 6-1 victory over Michigan on Friday afternoon at the UCSB Campus Diamond.
Bertuccio had little trouble against a Big 10 Conference lineup, allowing just two runners past second base. In addition, Michigan had only one extra base hit off Bertuccio, and the Wolverines (7-4) did not score until the sixth inning. Offensively, Sacramento State scored runs in four of the first six innings of the contest.
Bertuccio's final line was seven innings pitched, five hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts. She threw 127 pitches, 82 for strikes. She improved to 2-1 and lowered her season ERA to 2.24.
The Hornets improved to 7-4 overall, and the win was the program's first over Michigan since 1997. Today's game was played in Santa Barbara, and these same two teams will meet again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
The Hornets scored a run in the first inning, two more in the second, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth. That was more than enough run support for Bertuccio as Sacramento State outhit the Wolverines, 9-5. Eight different Hornets had hits, led by
Alexis Parish going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The big blow of the game (and the Hornets' lone extra base hit) came off the bat of freshman
Malissa George who crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall in the fifth inning.
Other highlights came on a bases loaded walk to
Gwen Ludwig in the second inning in which Ludwg saw 11 pitches in the at-bat.
Andrea Lira would add a two-out RBI-single later in the second.
In the sixth inning,
Lewa Day had an RBI-single, and Lira an RBI-ground ball scoring Ludwig. The top five batters in the Hornet lineup (
Haley Hanson, Ludwig, Day, Lira and George) all had a hit.
Samantha Parish and
Kennedy Echols also had hits.
Alexis Parish, who is now batting .500 this season, has hit safely in seven straight games.
