SOFTBALL DROPS COX CLASSIC FINALE TO NEBRASKA, NOW 6-3 THIS SEASON

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Nebraska overcame a 3-0 deficit with four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, to defeat Sacramento State, 8-3, at the Troy Cox Classic on Sunday morning.

The game was the finale of the three-day tournament, hosted by New Mexico State. The Hornets went 3-2 at the tournament with both losses to Nebraska, and wins over North Dakota (twice) and New Mexico State. The Hornets finished the event batting .379 (58-for-153) with 41 runs over five games.

The Hornets and Huskers both moved their season records to 6-3. That marks the best nine-game start for Sacramento State since the 2005 team was also 6-3. Of the Hornets' three losses, two have come by a single run.

Nebraska is currently receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball, and USA Today/NFCA top 25 polls.

In today's game, freshman Malissa George continued a torrid start to her collegiate career, banging a three-run homer to left field in the second inning. In four games, she is batting .778 (7-for-9) with an .833 on-base percentage, two doubles, a homer and eight RBIs. She has been retired just twice in her first 12 plate appearances, and is averaging 2.0 RBIs per game.

The Hornets carried that three-run lead into the fifth inning where Nebraska would proceed to score eight unanswered runs - four in the fifth (all with two outs), and four more in the seventh. Sacramento State had five hits in the first four innings, but was held hitless the final three frames.

George, Haley Hanson, Andrea Lira, Alexis Parish and Kennedy Echols each had a hit for the Hornets. Lewa Day (8) and Gwen Ludwig (7) had their respective hitting streaks snapped. Day had hit safely in each of the first eight games of the season prior to today.

Savannah Wahl (5.0 ip), Keeli Smith (1.0 ip) and Marissa Bertuccio (1.0 ip) each pitched for the Hornets.

Sacramento State will play five games away from home next week - Wednesday at Fresno State; Thursday-Saturday at a tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara. Wednesday's game at Fresno State will begin at 3 p.m.
