SOFTBALL DROPS ROAD GAME TO FRESNO STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State held Fresno State scoreless for five innings, but the Bulldogs struck for six runs in the third on the way to a 6-2 win over the Hornets on Wednesday at Margie Wright Diamond.

The Hornets, who are nearly finished with an eight-game trip away from home, dropped to 6-4. Sacramento State is 3-3 on the trip, and will conclude the eight-gamer with contests vs. Michigan on Friday at 2 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m. Both of those games will be played in Santa Barbara.

Fresno State (7-4) sent 11 batters to the plate in a third inning that included six runs, six hits and three Sacramento State errors. The Hornets entered the game with three errors all season, and matched that total in one inning.

The Hornets scored their first run via the legs of Gwen Ludwig. The speedster had a one-out infield single, stole second base, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch. Sacramento State tacked on another run in the fifth inning on a Kennedy Echols ground ball scoring pinch runner Avery Brown.

Ludwig finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and three stolen bases while Alexis Parish was 2-for-2 with a walk. They combined for four of Sacramento State's six hits, as Echols and Haley Hanson also had a knock. Sacramento State is now 18-for-22 in stolen base attempts this year with Hanson (8-for-9) and Ludwig (7-for-7) leading the way.

Parish extended her hitting streak to six games, while Ludwig has hit safely in eight of her last nine games.

Right-hander Marissa Bertuccio was impressive in relief, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.
