EVANS AND DAY LEAD SOFTBALL TO 4-1 ROAD WIN AT UC DAVIS

DAVIS, Calif. -- Caroline Evans threw a complete game, and Lewa Day crushed a three-run homer to lead Sacramento State to a 4-1 road win at UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at LaRue Field.

Evans was dominant, allowing just three hits and one run with a pair of walks and six strikeouts over seven innings. She threw 99 pitches, and struck out the side in the seventh inning to eliminate any chance of an Aggie comeback.

Day's home run, which came on a 1-0 pitch and was pulled down the left field line, gave the Hornets an early 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. The home run for Day was her second of the season, and extended her school record to 48 career homers.

Today marked the conclusion of the season-opening NorCal Kickoff, and the Hornets finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. That included winning each of their final three games, posting wins against Middle Tennessee and San Jose State as well. The Hornets hosted their first three games of the tournament, and today marked the first of 11 straight games Sacramento State will play away from home.

Day had a remarkable tournament, batting .545 (6-for-11) with four runs, two doubles, a triple, two home runs, eight RBIs and a 1.455 slugging percentage. She also had a three-run homer in the first inning in the victory over San Jose State.

Evans finished the tourney 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA, allowing just four hits and one run and 10 strikeouts over 12.0 innings. Opponents hit just .103 when she was in the circle. Overall, the Hornet pitching staff posted a 1.35 ERA during tournament play. Both Evans and Day have a good chance of winning Big Sky Pitcher, and Player of the Week, respectively.

After Day's three-run homer in the first inning, UC Davis cut into the deficit with one run in the third inning. That proved to be the Aggies' lone run as Evans did not allow a hit the final three innings. Sacramento State tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Day led off the inning with a double, and later came around to score on an Aggie error.

Leadoff hitter Haley Hanson continued her torrid start at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run and stolen base. She now has six hits over her last two games, and leads the team wtih a .636 batting average (7-for-11). Hanson had a walkoff RBI-single in yesterday's victory over Middle Tennessee.

Day finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, as she and Hanson combined for five of the Hornets' seven hits. Gwen Ludwig and Jenna Birch had the other Hornet knocks. Both Day and Andrea Lira hit safely in all four games of the tournament.

The Hornets are back in action next week when they compete at the New Mexico State Invitational. Sacramento State opens the tournament on Friday with a doubleheader vs. North Dakota beginning at 9 a.m. PT. The Hornets also play 18th-ranked Nebraska twice, and host New Mexico State during tourney play.
