Lewa Day combined for two home runs and five RBIs, and Sacramento State pitching limited North Dakota to nine hits and three runs over 13.0 innings as the Hornets registered a doubleheader sweep. The Hornets beat the Fighting Hawks in the first game, 8-0 (six innings), before taking the nightcap, 6-3.
The doubleheader marked the first two games of the Troy Cox Classic, a three-day tournament hosted by New Mexico State. The Hornets will play Nebraska and New Mexico State tomorrow, followed by the finale on Sunday vs. Nebraska.
After dropping their season opener, the Hornets have now won five straight and improved to 5-1. That is the program's best six-game start since the 1995 squad began the year 6-0.
Sacramento State right-handers
Marissa Bertuccio and
Savannah Wahl allowed just nine hits (all singles) and three runs over 13.0 innings. That included 20 strikeouts and just two walks. Bertuccio, who was perfect through three innings, earned the victory in Game 1 after tossing a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Wahl, who was perfect through five innings, got the complete-game victory while striking out a career-best 12 batters. She already had seven strikeouts through just the third inning.
Day homered in both games, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-6 with three runs, a double, two homers and five RBIs. Her incredible start to the season continued as she is now batting .588 (10-for-17) with four homers and 13 RBIs over six games. That breaks down to one homer every 4.3 at-bats, and she has homered in three straight games. Day also reached 50 career home runs, the first player in school history to accomplish the feat.
Alexis Parish continued her hot start to the season, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs, a double and a triple. The left fielder is now batting .500 (8-for-16) with an .813 slugging percentage.
Combined, Sacramento State's offense banged out 18 hits to go with eight walks. That included freshman
Malissa George, who received her first collegiate start and plate appearances. She responded by going 2-for-2 with a double, walk and a pair of RBIs. She was a big part of a five-run third inning in Game 2, where Day crushed a three-run homer and George later added a two-out, RBI-double.
Sacramento State also had a five-run inning in Game 1 (fourth inning), highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by
Andrea Lira. That was one of two run-scoring hits in the game for Lira, who finished the contest 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Haley Hanson added two more hits and stole three bases, and she is how hitting .500 (9-for-18) with six stolen bases.
Tomorrow, the Hornets will take on Nebraska at 11 a.m. PT, and New Mexico State at 4 p.m. PT. Neither game will be streamed.
