WALKOFF! HANSON’S SINGLE DELIVERS SOFTBALL A 5-4 WIN OVER MIDDLE TENNESSEE

SACRAMENTO -- With the score tied and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Haley Hanson's single scored Kennedy Echols with the game-winning run as Sacramento State beat Middle Tennessee, 5-4, in walkoff fashion.

The Hornets are now 2-1 at the season-opening NorCal Kickoff, and will conclude the three-day tournament tomorrow on the road at UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. Sacramento State opened the tournament yesterday with a win over San Jose State and a loss to Cal Poly.

Hanson's hit completed a win that saw Sacramento State jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but the Blue Raiders scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to tie. The Hornets finished with nine hits, led by Hanson who finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.

The Hornets scored twice in the first inning on an RBI-triple from Lewa Day, followed by an RBI-single from Andrea Lira. Sacramento State tacked on two more in the second after Day's RBI-single scored Samantha Parish, followed by a Blue Raider error allowing Hanson to score.

Savannah Wahl (1-0) went the distance for the win, striking out six batters over seven innings. One of her four runs allowed was unearned. Day, Lira, Echols, Parish, Gwen Ludwig and Caroline Evans also had hits.

Five Hornets already have at least four hits through three games, including Lira (5), Hanson (4), Day (4), Echols (4) and Alexis Parish (4). Sacramento State is hitting .390 as a team thus far, and the pitching staff has a 1.47 ERA.

Tomorrow's contest at UC Davis will begin a stretch of 11 straight games away from home for Sacramento State.
