SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State head coach
David Patrick announced the program is elevating
Elijah Roth to the team's director of basketball operations.
The promotion comes after Roth spent last season as the Hornets' director of scouting and analytics. Patrick's staff for 2023-24 includes Roth, associate head coach
Michael Czepil, and assistant coaches
Hays Myers,
Loren Leath and
Tyson Batiste. Each coach on staff enters their second season with the Hornets.
"Elijah has worked relentlessly for our program since he was hired," Patrick said. "I've seen him grow as a person and coach over the last few years, and we are excited to have him as our new director of basketball operations."
Roth was a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 2020-21, where he served on the same staff with Patrick who was the associate head coach. They helped coach the Razorbacks to 25 wins and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Roth came to the Hornets after spending one year (2021-22) as a video scout and analytics consultant for Sports Info Solutions.
Roth played a big role for a Hornet coaching staff that began laying the foundation last season. Sacramento State won 14 games in 2022-23, easily the most by a first-year coaching staff in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1991-pres.), and the third best mark in program history (1948-pres.).
In addition, the team was a top six seed at the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the second time in 16 years. In fact, the Hornets received a first round bye at the tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 1996.
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Roth has six seasons of experience at the collegiate level, which includes four seasons (2016-20) as the student manager at Arizona. During his four-year tenure, the Wildcats combined for a 97-39 record, two Pac-12 Tournament championships, and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2018.
