SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State men's basketball head coach
David Patrick announced the program's promotion of
Tyson Batiste on the Hornets' coaching staff.
Batiste, who enters his second season with the Hornets, has been elevated from director of operations to assistant coach. Patrick's staff for 2023-24 includes associate head coach
Michael Czepil, as well as assistants
Hays Myers,
Loren Leath and Batiste. Each coach on staff enters their second season with the Hornets.
"Tyson has developed so much in all facets of the job," Patrick said. "His promotion to assistant coach is well earned, and I'm very excited to make this announcement. His ability to connect with, and develop, our student-athletes is vital to the growth of our program."
Batiste was a big contributor to a Hornet coaching staff that began laying the foundation last season. Sacramento State won 14 games in 2022-23, easily the most by a first-year coaching staff in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1991-pres.), and the third best mark in program history (1948-pres.).
In addition, the team was a top six seed at the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the second time in 16 years. In fact, the Hornets received a first round bye at the tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 1996.
Sacramento State finished first in the Big Sky in rebounding margin (+6.0 per game) and offensive rebounds (10.9 per game), and third in scoring defense (67.8 ppg). The rebounding margin ranked as the 18th best mark in the nation.
Batiste, who played three years at Central Connecticut State followed by a season at The Citadel, came to the Hornets after spending a season as a graduate assistant at both Texas Tech (2021-22) and Arkansas (2020-21). That included an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance with Texas Tech, and an Elite 8 appearance at Arkansas. Patrick was the associate head coach on that Arkansas staff.
