MEN'S GOLF FINISHES FIRST DAY OF REDHAWK INVITATIONAL

Hornets in 14th place heading into the final round at Chambers Bay

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Zach Mate led the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round of the Redhawk Invitational and Riley Bell and Jeffrey Perry tied for the team lead in the second round on Monday at Chambers Bay GC.

The Hornets shot 297-301-598 and are 14th out of 17 teams through the first day. Idaho holds the team lead at 10-under par after rounds of 292-276-558. The Vandals are trailed by Northern Colorado (565), SeattleU (575), Cal State Fullerton (575) and Oregon State (577) in the top five.

Mate was 1-over through his first five holes and then dropped to 2-under with birdies on the par-4 12th and par-3 15th and 17th, Once back on the front side of the course, he bogeyed the par-4 second and doubled the par-4 fourth to finish at 1-over. He shot 79 in the second round and is tied for 62nd.

Bell shot 73 in both rounds and is tied for 29th overall. In the morning round, he had three birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey. He added three more birdies in the second round to accompany four bogeys and a double bogey.

Jeffrey Perry is tied for 57th after rounds of 77-73-150. Perry had four bogeys and a double bogey in the morning. He followed with two birdies and four bogeys in the second round.

Casey Leebrick shot 75-76-151 and tied with Mate for 62nd. Leebrick had four bogeys and 14 pars in the first round. His second round was comprised of two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

Seattle's Nathan Cogswell was 7-under par during the day to build a 3-stroke lead. Cogswell shot 66 in the morning and followed with a 69. Idaho's Colt Sherrell is the next closest (66-72) while five others are tied for third and are five strokes off the lead.
