STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sacramento State closed the regular season schedule with 4-1 losses to both Santa Clara and UC Davis. Both matches were played on neutral sand in Stockton.
The Hornets were playing their final tuneups before next week's Big West Conference Tournament in Honolulu on Friday and Saturday. Sacramento State will bring a 6-15 record into the postseason event.
As has been the case all season, both of today's matches were littered with close scores. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came out on the losing end of the majority of those outcomes.
Sacramento State got its lone win in the Santa Clara match from the No. 2 combination of
Caitlin Volkmann/
Ellie Tisko (24-26, 21-18, 15-10). Volkmann/Tisko have been the Hornets' most consistent doubles team as they improved to 7-5 this season (all at the No. 2 spot in the lineup).
In the loss to UC Davis, the Hornets' No. 1 duo of
Kalani Hayes/
Bridgette Smith won their match by a 21-19, 21-13 score. They have now played 19 matches at the No. 1 spot in the team's lineup, and are 9-10.
Next week's Big West Tournament will take place at Queens Beach in Honolulu.
