SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State head women's tennis coach Sophie Breault announced that Elena Mercioiu has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her athletic and academic career with the Hornets beginning with the 2023-24 campaign.
Mercioiu, who was born in Râmnicu Vâlcea, Romania, before moving to France at the age of nine, becomes the second newcomer to join the program after Texas native Reese Walker signed her letter in November of last year.
"We are super excited to add Elena to our Hornet family," Breault said. "Elena is a bright, hard-working, and talented baseline player with an aggressive game. She has great fundamental skills and will have an immediate impact on our program's success to compete for championships. Her driven and hardworking personality will help her grow and develop quickly and make her a great fit within our program."
A veteran at numerous levels in France, she reached the finals of an International Tennis Federation G5 event in Blagnac in October of 2021 and gained the quarterfinals of another G5 event in Colomiers in March of 2022.
Before that she has posted tournament victories at six different events; ASCH Montpellier, Pierre Rouge Tournament in Monpellier, Beziers, the La Grande Motte Tournament, and Lunel, with the last coming as recently as February of this year at Istres.
