LA JOLLA, Calif. — Junior newcomer Nel Van Hout reached the quarterfinals in the singles main draw while a pair of doubles teams advanced all the way to the quarterfinals to highlight the Sacramento State women's tennis team's performance at the Big West Fall Selection Tournament hosted by UC San Diego over the weekend in La Jolla, Calif.

The tournament served as a qualifying even for the ITA Conference Masters event, with the singles and doubles champions earning the league's berths into the tournament.

Four of the six Hornet singles players opened with wins on Friday, including Van Hout's three-set win over CSUN's Hannah Allen, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. The junior followed that up with an upset of the 10th-seeded Diana De Simone from Long Beach State in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. However, her run ended in the round of 16 with a straight-set defeat at the hands of second-seeded Shachf Lieberman of UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, 6-3.

Senior Reese Walker, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, advanced to the round of 32 after UC San Diego's Emma Pell retired due to injury with Walker leading 5-4 in the first set. Walker's run came to an end, however, with a loss to Cal Poly's Natalie Lynch, 6-4, 7-5.

Jess Schilz and Viktoriia Sedova also posted opening round victories with the former posting a marathon win over Cal Poly's Aspen Chung, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-5, and the latter defeating CSUN's Veorah Feddanich, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, the tandem of Sedova and Van Hout opened with an 8-3 victory over the Cal Poly duo of Chung and Kaia Celin Bostrom Jorgensen, then defeated Cal State Fullerton's Seha Yu and Johanna Hjesmair, 8-3. The run ended with a narrow loss to UC Santa Barbara's third-seeded team of Caroline Beard and Ekua Youri in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4).

The duo of Irene Riva and Reese Walker entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed, opening with a commanding win over UC Irvine's Maily Huynh and Sayuri Parandian, 8-1, then eased past CSUN's tandem of Tallia Harper and Ran Todo, 8-2. They then found themselves in a battle with the third-seeded team of Jessica MacCallum and Natalie Lynch of Cal Poly before falling, 8-6.

Sacramento State's fall schedule continues with a short trip to the Bay Area to participate in the ITA Northwest Regionals at Stanford, Calif., beginning Thursday (Oct 8) and running through the next Tuesday (Oct. 13).
