SAN DIEGO -- Sacramento State received double figures in kills from
Greta Davis (14),
Ellie Tisko (14) and
Caitlin Volkmann (12) on the way to a 3-2 win (25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 22-25, 15-8) over San Diego State in the third and final round of the Aztec Invitational.
The Hornets conclude the two-day event with a 1-2 record, which included two narrow losses yesterday to Arizona (3-2) and Maryland (3-1). Of Sacramento State's nine matches this season, only two have resulted in 3-0 sweeps as the Hornets have played every opponent tough.
Sacramento State finished the match with 10 aces and 12.0 team blocks while limiting the Aztecs (2-7)Â to a .217 hitting percentage. Three of those aces came in the fifth set, including two from libero
Bridgette Smith and one from
Carrie Crom. Both of Smith's aces came during a match-finishing 9-3 run. That 9-3 spurt allowed the Hornets to stretch a 6-5 lead into a 15-8 fifth-set win.
The victory was the first five-set win of the year for the Hornets. Sacramento State (3-6) hit better than .270 in each of its three victorious sets, including a .333 mark in the fifth.
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin came up big in the fifth, finishing the frame with three kills and a block.
Tisko's 14 kills were a career high as the rightside hitter also finished with a .276 hitting percentage and four blocks. Davis, a freshman outside hitter, has now gone for double figures in kills in six straight matches with her 14 this afternoon. Volkmann's 12 kills accompanied a .375 hitting percentage.
