MEN'S TENNIS WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT, DOWNS IDAHO, 4-3, ON THE ROAD

EDITOR'S NOTE: This match was later protested by Idaho, and a 4-3 win was awarded to the Vandals.

LEWISTON, Idaho - Sacramento State won a very important doubles point, and picked up singles wins from Mark Keki, Mate Voros and Hayden Rand to defeat Idaho, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the LCSC Tennis Center.

The Hornets continue to play good tennis as the team won its fourth straight while improving to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky Conference. In addition, the Hornets have won three consecutive Big Sky matches, and improved to 6-4 on the road.

Idaho dropped to 6-11 overall, 2-2 in league, and lost for the first time at home (2-1).

With the score tie at 3-3, it was Rand at No. 6 that provided the match clincher. The true freshman won his match over Alex Asenov by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 score, and he has now won five straight singles matches.

The Hornets, who are in the midst of a five-game road trip to conclude the regular season, earned a very important doubles point when the combinations of Mate Voros/Mark Keki (7-5 at No. 1) and Ori Maior/Rand (7-6 at No. 2) were each victorious.

The Hornets took a 2-0 lead after Keki won his match at No. 1 in straight sets (6-3, 6-4), only to see Idaho tie things at 2-2 after wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles. Voros then won his match at No. 3 (7-6, 1-6, 6-4) to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. However, Idaho got a three-set win at No. 5 to tie things at 3-3.

That set the stage for Rand, who continues to shine as a true freshman. He improved to 8-1 this year in singles play, and 4-1 against conference opposition.

"Ori and Hayden played incredible doubles, and Mate and Mark played one of the better doubles matches you will ever watch," Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "We are very proud of the team in how they competed, fought, and got the job done."

The Hornets have just two Big Sky matches left on the regular season schedule, and those will come next week at the Montana schools. That begins on Tuesday at Montana, and concludes Thursday at Montana State.
