SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State played three matches on Saturday at Hornet Beach, beating both San Fransico and Pacific, 3-2, while falling to Saint Mary's, 4-1. Today were the season-opening matches for the Hornets, and their 2-1 record is the best start after three matches since the 2017 season.
The Hornets used the same doubles teams in all three matches, led by the duo of Ashtin Olin/McKenna Smith, who went a perfect 3-0 at No. 3. Bridgette Smith and Caitlin Volkmann, both making their Sacramento State beach debuts, went 2-1 at No. 2. Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/Ellie Tisko (No. 4) and Caty Cordano/Karlee Soderberg (No. 5) also picked up a win. Macey Hayden and Kalani Hayes played at the team's No. 1 spot.
Olin/Smith picked straight-set wins against San Francisco and Pacific, and also had a three-set victory against Saint Mary's.
In the one-day round robin tournament, Saint Mary's finished the day 3-0, the Hornets were 2-1, San Francisco 1-2 and Pacific 0-3.
"It was an incredible day at Hornet Beach," Sacramento State co-head coach Ruben Volta said. "I was very excited to see the improvement from last season from all the pairs. We will continue to work hard and improve every day."
The Hornets will play San Francisco three more times this season. The Hornets and the Dons will meet again on Friday in San Fransico at 2 p.m.
