MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD AT PORTLAND STATE, 73-65

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a game Sacramento State shot well but could not overcome a whopping 24 turnovers, the Hornets fell on the road at Portland State, 73-65, on Saturday evening at Viking Pavilion.

The Hornets certainly shot well enough to win, converting on 47% (23-49) from the field, 53% (9-17) from the 3-point line and 77% (10-13) from the free throw line. However, Sacramento State, usually not a mistake-prone team, committed 24 turnovers leading to a massive disparity in points off miscues. The 24 turnovers are the most in over 14 years for the program - 24 at San Francisco on Nov. 17, 2007. Portland State scored 26 points off those turnovers, and held a 26-9 advantage in points off miscues.

Still, despite the sloppy play, Sacramento State found itself down just a point (47-46) with under 11 minutes to play. However, Portland State would use a 14-2 run spanning just over five minutes to take a game-high 13-point lead (61-48) with 5:35 to play. Sacramento State would close to within six points twice during the final 1:45 but couldn't get closer as the Vikings made their free throws down the stretch.

Sacramento State dropped its third straight while falling to 6-13 overall and 2-10 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets, who fell at home to Portland State earlier this year by five points, were swept by PSU in a season series for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

The Vikings won their season-high fourth straight game while improving to 8-13 overall and 6-7 in league play. Not only were the turnovers a big problem, so was PSU senior guard Ezekiel Alley who scored a season-high 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 from distance. He also added five steals, and 17 of his points came in the second half.

The Hornets' largest lead of the evening was six points after a Teiano Hardee bucket gave the team an early 17-11 lead. Portland State shot 43% (23-54) from the floor, 38% (8-21) from the 3-point line and 73% (19-26) from the free throw line. The Hornets held a 36-27 advantage in the rebounding department, but were outscored, 14-7, in fast break points - many of those coming off Sacramento State turnovers. Five different PSU players had multiple steals on the evening, and four different Hornets had at least three turnovers.

For Sacramento State, Jonathan Komagum scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, and notched his second double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds (four on the offensive glass). The 15 points were a career high as he finished 4-for-6 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Komagum, who also had three blocks and three steals, was one of four Hornets to score in double figures.

Bryce Fowler had 21 points, five rebounds and five assists, William FitzPatrick had 12 points on 4-for-10 shooting from distance, and Zach Chappell added 10 points and five rebounds. Hardee finished with five points and three rebounds. FitzPatrick is now 15-for-31 (.484) over his last four games from long range.

Sacramento State will play twice next week at the Nest - Thursday vs. Northern Colorado at 7 p.m., and Saturday vs. Southern Utah at 1 p.m.
