SOFTBALL WINNING STREAK SNAPPED IN LOSS AT SAN JOSE STATE

Box Score

SAN JOSE -- San Jose State scored eight unearned runs in the fourth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and eventually defeat Sacramento State, 12-7, on Sunday morning at Spartan Softball Complex.

The game marked the finale of the Silicon Valley Classic, and the Hornets concluded the three-day event with a 3-2 record. Sacramento State lost its first game of the tournament to Utah State before running off three straight wins against Santa Clara (twice) and Cal Poly. That streak, however, came to an end this morning.

Sacramento State is now 6-8 overall this season, and four of those wins have come against Santa Clara. Today also marked the finale of 10 straight games away from home. The Hornets will be back at home next week when they co-host the Capital Classic with UC Davis from Friday-Sunday. Sacramento State will play once at home on Friday, twice at the Aggies' field on Saturday, and twice more at home on Sunday.

Two very costly errors in the fourth inning allowed San Jose State to score eight unearned runs in the inning. Sacramento State's offense scored twice in the third inning, three times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth, but the Spartans had big innings in both the fourth (8 runs) and fifth (4 runs) frames.

Of the 81 runs allowed this season by Sacramento State pitching, a whopping 27 have been unearned. That's an average of nearly two unearned runs allowed per game.

Offensively, the Hornets had big days from Lexie Webb and Samantha Parish. Webb finished 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and five RBIs. She now has a team-high five homers and 12 RBIs, and has homered in back-to-back games. In addition, Webb has hit safely in all but two games this season, including 12 of the last 13 games.

Parish finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of doubles to raise her average to .333. Of her 15 hits this season, seven have been for extra bases, including five doubles, one triple and a homer. A total of six Hornets had hits in today's game, including Lewa Day, Carley Morfey, Rylee Gresham and Milan Machado-Buckley. The hit for Morfey extended her hitting streak to seven games, while Day is riding a five-game streak.

Sacramento State used three pitchers - Webb (3.2 ip), Caroline Evans (0.2 ip) and Marissa Bertuccio (1.2 ip). Bertuccio came on in relief, and allowed no runs and no hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings. In the process, she lowered her season ERA to 1.97.

The Hornets begin the Capital Classic at home on Friday vs. Dixie State at 2 p.m. The tournament is a three-team round robin as Sacramento State will play Dixie State three times over three days, and twice against UC Davis.
