Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State got big performances from seniors Bryce Fowler (26) and William FitzPatrick (20) as the two combined for 46 points in an 81-75 Senior Night win over Eastern Washington on Saturday evening at the Nest.
The two seniors, who were honored prior to the game, were major factors in Sacramento State's third straight victory, and third straight game with 80-plus points. Fowler finished with 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting to go along with six assists, four rebounds, just one turnover and a whopping +17 in plus/minus. Nineteen of those points came in a second half in which the Hornets outscored the Eagles, 46-38.
FitzPatrick came out blazing with 16 first-half points on 5-for-9 from distance. The sniper finished the game with 20 points in a team-high 37 minutes. He was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 25 seconds to help put the game away.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as the Eagles entered the break with a 37-35 halftime advantage. Both teams battled back and forth the first portion of the second half before Sacramento State went on the biggest run of the game - a 12-1 spurt over a three-minute span that stretched a one-point deficit to a 70-60 lead with 3:45 to play. The Eagles did get back to within three points of that deficit, but FitzPatrick's late free throws put the game away.
Sacramento State stretched its winning streak to three games, and now owns a 9-16 overall record and 5-13 mark in the Big Sky Conference. Eastern Washington, which entered the game having won four of its last five games, dropped to 15-14 and 9-9 in league. The Hornets and Eagles split the season series as EWU won in Cheney earlier this year.
With just two games left in the regular season - both on the road next week at the Montana schools - Sacramento State has moved up to eighth place where its sits in a three-way tie with Northern Arizona and Idaho who are also 5-13 in league. Idaho State is 11th with a 5-14 record. Sacramento State began the week in 11th, but the 2-0 homestand vaulted them up three spots in the standings. The Big Sky Tournament begins on March 9 in Boise, and every team in the league qualifies for the postseason event.
The Hornets buried a season-high 13 3-pointers and knocked down 45% (13-29) of their shots from distance. Sacramento State also turned the ball over just four times, and enjoyed a massive 17-2 edge in points off turnovers. Eastern Washington didn't help itself by going just 14-for-24 from the free throw line while the Hornets were 10-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Zach Chappell had 12 points and four assists while also burying 4-of-6 looks from distance. Center Jonathan Komagum had six points, nine rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot, and Rick Barros III had eight points (2-for-3 from 3PT) and a +14 in 24 minutes played. Cameron Wilbon had seven points and four rebounds, and Hugo Carkin added two points, three boards and a block.
Four Eagle starters scored in double figures, including Ethan Price (team-high 18 pts) who was 8-for-14 from the free throw line.
Sacramento State will play at Montana State on Thursday, and at Montana on Saturday. Both games will begin at 6 p.m. PST, and conclude the regular season.
