Box Score POCATELLO, Idaho -- Sacramento State's Bryce Fowler (29) and William FitzPatrick (21) combined for 50 points to help lead the Hornets to an 80-75 road win at Idaho State on Saturday evening at Reed Gym.
The Hornets led for just 6:43 of clock, but came up large late. That included a 10-3 run that snapped a tie and gave Sacramento State a 72-65 lead with 1:28 remaining. Idaho State would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Hornets went 8-for-8 from the free throw line over the final 49 seconds to seal the win.
In a game where neither team led by double digits the entire way, Sacramento State posted season highs in field goal percentage (.577, 30-for-52) and 3-point percentage (.643, 9-of-14). That included 62% from the field, and 4-of-5 from distance in a second half that saw the Hornets outscore the Bengals, 47-38. Sacramento State trailed by four at halftime.
A big part of those healthy percentages was FitzPatrick who scored a season-high 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 from distance. He did not miss a shot in the second half, going 3-for-3 from the floor, 2-of-2 from distance and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. This comes two nights after he set his original season high of 17 points vs. Weber State.
Fowler, once again, was dominant. The fifth-year senior, and fifth-year starter, led all players with 29 points on 13-for-22 shooting from the field. He also had nine rebounds and three assists, and scored 19 of those 29 points in the second half. He now has four games with at least 29 points this season, and raised his season scoring average to 17.5 points per contest.
With the win, Sacramento State snapped a six-game losing streak while improving its record to 7-16 overall and 3-13 in Big Sky Conference play. The Hornets swept the season series over Idaho State, which includes a 61-60 win in the Nest on Jan. 27.
The Bengals (6-19, 4-12) were playing well, having won three of their last five games. That includes impressive wins over Montana and Northern Colorado during that span. The Bengals were coming off a 61-58 home win over the Bears on Thursday.
Jonathan Komagum was the third Hornet to score in double figures as he finished with 11 points and four rebounds. That includes seven points on 5-for-5 free throw shooting in the second half. He converted on four big free throws in the final minute. Zach Chappell had nine points, including a huge 3-pointer with 3:15 to play that gave the Hornets a two-possession lead (67-63). Rick Barros III had six points on 2-for-2 from distance, and Cameron Wilbon added four points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Liam Sorensen led Idaho State with 24 points, but had six turnovers in 39 minutes.
Sacramento State has just four games left in the regular season, including a pair of home contests next week vs. Idaho on Thursday and Eastern Washington on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. Fowler and FitzPatrick, the Hornets' lone seniors, will be honored for their contributions to the program prior to Saturday's game.
