Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Southern Utah led from start to finish, and shot 13-for-28 from the 3-point line, on the way to an 83-57 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon at the Nest.
The Thunderbirds opened the game on a 10-0 run, and finished the final four minutes of the first half on a 13-0 run to enter halftime with a 43-22 lead. Sacramento State got no closer than within 16 points the entire second half.
Southern Utah's 13 3-pointers were the most allowed by the Hornets this season, and the T-Birds shot 51% (30-59) from the field and 83% (10-12) from the free throw line to go along with the 13 made treys. The Thunderbirds also held a 36-25 advantage in the rebounding department and limited the Hornets to 42% (23-55) shooting and 19% (4-21) from distance. Sacramento State missed 15 of its first 16 attempts from three.
Southern Utah won for the fifth time in its last six games while improving to 16-7 overall and 10-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The T-Birds swept the season series from the Hornets, which includes a 64-51 win in Cedar City on Dec. 30.
Sacramento State, which has just six games left in the regular season, dropped to 6-15 overall and 2-12 in the Big Sky. The Hornets have lost five straight, and, uncharacteristically, have had trouble with Big Sky teams at home (1-7).
Once again, Bryce Fowler played well for the Hornets, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 8-for-14 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds and three assists with zero turnovers in 37 minutes Center Jonathan Komagum scored in double figures for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Rick Barros III scored a season-high nine points on 3-for-5 from the 3-point line. All nine of those points came in the second half. The rest of the Sacramento State squad combined to go 1-for-16 from distance. Deshaun Highler had six points, four assists and three rebounds, and Marcus Greened added five points. Cameron Wilbon finished with four.
Six different Thunderbirds buried 3-pointers, led by Tevian Jones' 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting (3-for-4 from 3FG).
Sacramento State is back in action next week at Weber State on Thursday and Idaho State on Saturday.
