MISSOULA, Mont. -- Sacramento State limited Montana to a .115 hitting percentage, and put together a very impressive 3-1 road win against the Grizzlies (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.
The victory came against a Montana (15-10, 8-5) squad that had won four straight, including a 3-1 win over first place Portland State just two days ago. Sacramento State (12-13, 8-5) swept the season series over the Grizzlies, which includes a four-set victory on Oct. 6 in the Nest.
The Hornets and Grizzlies are now tied for fourth place with just three matches left in the regular season. However, only 1.5 games separate the top five teams in the league standings. Just three regular season matches remain, and Sacramento State will play each of those at home. The Big Sky Tournament begins Nov. 23 in Ogden, and today's win clinched a spot for the Hornets in the eight-team postseason event.
Today also marks just the second time in 15 years that Sacramento State has swept the two-game season series against Montana.
The Hornets limited Montana to 43 kills with 27 errors in 139 attacks. That .115 hitting percentage is the Grizzlies' second lowest mark against a Big Sky opponent this year. The Hornets hit .211 and used 13.5 team blocks to help neutralize the Montana offense. After the two teams split the first two sets, it was all Sacramento State from there, outscoring the Grizzlies, 50-34, over the final two frames.
There were plenty of Hornet contributors in today's win, including libero
Caty Cordano who notched her 1,000th career dig during the first set. Cordano finished with a match-high 19 digs to go along with an ace.
Setter
Ashtin Olin finished with four kills, a .500 hitting percentage, 35 assists, 12 digs, an ace and a pair of blocks. Outside hitter
Bridgette Smith led the team with 16 kills which included a .333 hitting percentage, six digs and three blocks. Middle blocker
Kalani Hayes had a big match, finishing with six kills, a .312 hitting percentage and nine blocks. Hayes was one of six different Hornets to finish with multiple stuffs.
Caitlin Volkmann had nine kills, eight digs and four blocks,
Ellie Tisko eight kills, eight digs, two aces and four blocks, and
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin four kills and a pair of blocks.
Montana's Paige Clark, who is the Big Sky leader in kills per set, finished with 16 kills, but was held to a .229 hitting percentage.
Sacramento State will enjoy some home cooking over the next two weeks as the team's final three regular season tilts will come at home. That begins next week with games at Eastern Washington on Thursday and Idaho on Saturday. Both begin at 7 p.m.
