SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State hit .388 (second best mark of the season) on the way to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) of Eastern Washington on Thursday evening at the Nest. The Hornets' largest deficit of the evening was one point early in both the second and third sets.
The Hornets finished with 40 kills (14 more than EWU) with just seven errors in 85 swings. It was a dominant effort in which five Sacramento State starters hit above .330. That included middle blocker
Kalani Hayes finishing with seven kills, eight blocks and a .500 hitting percentage.
Sacramento State has won three of its last four matches while improving to 13-13 overall and 9-5 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets were playing the first of three straight home games to conclude the regular season, and remain a game and a half game back of first place. The three teams ahead of Sacramento State in the conference standings all won tonight - Northern Colorado (10-3), Weber State (10-3) and Portland State (10-4).
The Hornets improved to 5-1 at home against conference competition, and four of those victories have come in three sets. Tonight marked the only time Sacramento State will face Eastern Washington this season. The Hornets play EWU and Weber State just once this year, while playing the other seven teams in the league twice.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 9-16 overall and 4-9 in league play. The Hornets improved to 41-18 all-time against Eastern Washington, including a 26-6 mark at home.
The Hornets were in complete control throughout, as Eastern Washington was limited to a .034 hitting percentage, the lowest mark by a Sacramento State opponent all season. In addition, the Eagles failed to record a team block while the Hornets finished with 12.0. Sacramento State hit better than .350 in all three frames.
Bridgette Smith had nine kills, seven digs, five blocks and a .333 hitting percentage, and setter
Ashtin Olin posted three kills, a .600 hitting percentage, 31 assists, four digs and two blocks.
Ellie Tisko was also impressive, finishing with eight kills, six digs, three aces and a .467 hitting percentage. Rounding out the Hornets with helfty hitting marks was
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin who finished with five kills, four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage.
Caitlin Volkmann posted eight kills and three blocks, and
Caty Cordano had a team-high eight digs.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday when the team hosts Idaho at 7 p.m. The Hornets conclude the regular season at home next Friday (Nov. 18) against Portland State. Prior to that match, Olin will be honored for her contributions to the program.
