SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State never trailed in a dominant performance and eventual three-set sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-14) of Montana State on Saturday afternoon in the Nest.
The Hornets (9-9, 5-1) now sit all alone in first place in the Big Sky Conference standings. Portland State (4-1) hosts Montana tonight, and could move into a tie for first with a win this evening.
In addition, the Hornets have won 10 straight home matches vs. Big Sky opposition dating back to last season. During that 10-match winning streak, the Hornets have outscored those opponents by a 30-1 margin in sets. That includes a 3-1 win over Montana on Thursday, as the Grizzlies had entered the match as the lone undefeated Big Sky team.
The loss dropped Montana State to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Hornets are now 48-9 all-time against Montana State, including a 27-2 mark when the teams play in the Nest.
Sacramento State held large statistical advantages in kills (41-26), hitting percentage (.286-.097), aces (6-3), assists (36-24), digs (52-40) and team blocks (8.0-6.0). In fact, the match was completed in a swift hour and 12 minutes as the Hornets were never really threatened.
Five different Hornets had at least six kills, including the middle blocker tandem of
Kalani Hayes (7 kills, 3 blocks, .500 hit%) and
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin (6 kills, 3 blocks, .556 hit%).
Bridgette Smith led all players with 10 kills, while
Greta Davis had eight kills and .375 hitting percentage, and
Caitlin Volkmann seven kills and .417 hitting percentage.
Defensively, libero
Caty Cordano had 16 digs while
Abbey Kadillak finished with 10 digs. Setter
Ashtin Olin had two kills, 30 assists, five digs and five blocks. Two of those blocks were solo stuffs.
Mia Guevara added four digs and an ace. Sacramento State used 13 players in today's match.
The Hornets will be on the road for two weeks, spanning three conference matches. That includes next week's contests on Thursday at Weber State (5 p.m. PT) and Saturday at Idaho State (6 p.m. PT).
