VOLLEYBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD AT WEBER STATE

OGDEN, Utah -- In a matchup of two of the top teams in the Big Sky Conference, it was Weber State that limited the Hornets to a season-low .031 hitting percentage on the way to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) of Sacramento State on Thursday evening at Swenson Gym.

The loss dropped Sacramento State (9-10, 5-2) out of first place in the Big Sky standings, and Weber State improved to 11-6 and 5-1 in league play. The Wildcats have now won 24 straight home matches over Big Sky competition dating back to 2019.

Today marks the only time the two teams will meet this season. The Wildcats, the defending Big Sky regular season champions, are now 5-1 at home, and have won five straight overall since dropping their conference opener at Weber State.

Today marked the first leg of a three-match road trip for the Hornets, who will play at Idaho State on Saturday evening. Sacramento State lost for just the third time all season when playing on an opponent's home floor (5-3).

Though Sacramento State is 40-16 all-time against Weber State, the Wildcats have won the last five meetings between the teams in Ogden.

Weber State used a big block (12.0 team blocks) and affected numerous other attempts with high hands as the Hornets had 32 kills with 28 errors in 130 attacks. In fact, the .031 hitting percentage was their lowest output of the season.

Sacramento State kept things close in the second set as the two teams were tied at 22-22. However, the Wildcats closed the frame on a 3-0 run.

No Hornet had more than eight kills, as both Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin and Bridgette Smith had eight. Kamba-Griffin also had a team-best .294 hitting percentage and three blocks. Libero Caty Cordano led all players with 20 digs, her fifth of the season with 20+ digs and 18th of her career.

Caitlin Volkmann had six kills, Kalani Hayes five kills and two blocks, and setter Ashtin Olin posted 29 assists, 12 digs and two blocks. Greta Davis had three kills and seven digs, and both Abbey Kadillak and Mia Guevara posted four digs. Ellie Tisko had a kill and a solo block.

The Hornets return to action this Saturday when the team plays at Idaho State at 6 p.m. PT. Sacramento State concludes the road trip next Saturday at Portland State.
