Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sacramento State limited Portland State to a .182 hitting percentage, but the Hornets fell in four sets (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25) to PSU on Saturday evening at Viking Pavilion.
The matchup featured the first place Vikings vs. the second place Hornets, but it was Portland State that improved 13-7 and 8-1 in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State, which concluded a three-game road trip, dropped to 10-11 and 6-3 in league play.
Of Sacramento State's seven remaining regular season matches, five will come at home. That stretch begins next week with games vs. Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona.
Both teams hit below .200, as the Hornets hit .174. Each of Sacramento State's last five opponents have hit below .200. The Vikings had six more kills (53-47) than the Hornets, and the teams combined for just 11 blocks. In fact, Sacramento State's 6.0 team blocks tied for the second lowest output of the season.
The Vikings used a 7-0 run to snap a 16-16 tie in the first set, used a 3-0 run to close the second, and squandered one match point in the fourth before putting things away.
For the Hornets,
Caitlin Volkmann led the way with 12 kills to go along with 11 digs. Fellow outside hitter
Bridgette Smith had 11 kills and 13 digs, and setter
Ashtin Olin finished with four kills, a .500 hitting percentage, 32 assists and a solo block.
Middle blocker
Kalani Hayes had nine kills and two blocks, and
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin posted three kills and three blocks.
Greta Davis finished with five kills, nine digs and three blocks, and
Ellie Tisko three kills and eight digs.
Abbey Kadillak, playing at libero for the injured
Caty Cordano, finished with six digs.
Mia Guevara had all three of the Hornets' aces while also posting five digs.
The Vikings had 10 aces compared to the Hornets' three aces.
Sacramento State returns to action next week to host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Northern Arizona on Saturday at 1 p.m.
