Box Score GREELEY, Colo. -- Sacramento State received huge performances from Bryce Fowler (30 points), Zach Chappell (24 points) and Cameron Wilbon (18 points), and the Hornets dominated from start to finish on the way to an 85-71 road win at Northern Colorado.
Fowler's 30 points were two shy of his career high while both Chappell and Wilbon posted career bests. The threesome combined for 72 of Sacramento State's 85 points, and Fowler had 20 of the team's 39 second half points. They combined to shoot 26-for-45 (58%) from the field and 6-of-11 (55%) from the 3-point line.
It was a dominant effort for Sacramento State, which led for nearly 39 minutes of game clock. In fact, Northern Colorado's only lead was 2-0 early in the contest. The Hornets' 85 points were their second highest output of the season, and the team led by at least eight points the entire second half. Sacramento State had an 18-point halftime advantage, and were never really threatened after the break.
Road wins always feel great, but this one was especially nice as Northern Colorado (8-8, 3-1) had been undefeated in Big Sky Conference play and at home (5-0). In fact, the Bears were the only team in the Big Sky that remained unbeaten in conference. In addition, the Hornets had lost seven straight in Greeley, and hadn't won on Northern Colorado's home floor since 2012.
Despite playing for just the third time in the last 35 days, Sacramento State improved to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big Sky. The Hornets have now won three games away from home this season, including victories over UC Davis and Cal Poly.
Sacramento State shot a season-high 53% (31-58) from the field, 50% (7-14) from the 3-point line, and outrebounded the Bears by a wide margin (40-32). The Hornets turned the ball over just nine times, and 10 of the team's 40 rebounds came on the offensive glass. In addition, Northern Colorado, the eighth best 3-point shooting team in the nation, was limited to 5-for-25 from long range.
The Hornets took control early in the game with an 11-2 run to go up, 11-4, with 16 minutes left in the first half, and broke the game open with a 15-7 spurt to close the first stanza and take a 46-28 lead into the break. In reality, Sacramento State could have won this game by a lot more as the team shot just 16-for-29 (55%) from the free throw line.
Fowler was unstoppable, scoring 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds, four assists, and was a +16 plus/minus in 37 minutes. His 30 points were two shy of a career best, which he set a month ago against Montana State. He is now averaging 17.5 points per game.
Chappell had his career high by halftime (18), and finished with 24 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. He also drew seven fouls, and shot 8-for-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from the 3-point line. He scored on a buzzer beating runner to close the first half, and had 18 of the team's 46 points before the break.
Wilbon also posted a career high in points, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds and a game-high three steals. He shot 7-for-15 from the field and 2-of-3 from the 3-point line while tallying a +12 in plus/minus. He had 11 points in the first half, and seven more in the second half.
Jonathan Komagum had four points and seven rebounds, William FitzPatrick tallied four points, four rebounds and four assists, and Teiano Hardee had three points and six boards. Both Komagum and Hardee were not able to play the Hornets' previous game, and were big factors in this afternoon's win. Komagum was a massive +19 in plus/minus, and FitzPatrick was a +18.
Northern Colorado had three players score in double figures, led by Daylen Kountz's 25 points. Bodie Hume, who averages 11.3 points per game, finished with just two points.
The Hornets are not scheduled to play again until hosting Portland State on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. That game is also Alumni Day, and all former Sacramento State men's basketball players will gain free admittance to the game.
