FIRST PLACE WEBER STATE DOWNS MEN'S BASKETBALL AT THE NEST

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Weber State shot 58% (28-48) from the field and 55% (12-22) from the 3-point line, as the first place team in the Big Sky Conference put on a shooting display in a 79-59 win over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at the Nest.

The Hornets played fairly well with 17 assists and a season-low four turnovers while shooting 8-for-16 from the 3-point line, but Weber State's high powered offense proved to be too much. The Wildcats shot 64% in the first half, and 52% in the second half against the Big Sky's third best defense in Sacramento State. Weber State also owned a 33-22 advantage in the rebounding department and held Sacramento State to zero second chance points.

With the loss, Sacramento State dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets were coming off a one-point win on Thursday over Idaho State, but Weber State, the first place team in the Big Sky, was too much to handle this evening.

The Wildcats have now won six straight since their lone conference defeat at Montana (74-72) on Jan. 1. At 16-5 overall and 9-1 in league play, Weber State sits all alone in first in the Big Sky standings at the halfway point of the conference season.

Sacramento State shot 44% (23-52) from the field and 50% (8-16) from deep. However, as has been the case all season, the Hornets were not good from the free throw line, shooting 42% (5-12) from the free throw line. Sacramento State missed all three front end of 1-and-1 situations in the second half.

Weber State's shooting percentages overall and from distance were the highest yielded by Sacramento State this season. Five different Wildcats hit multiple 3-pointers, and each of those players shot it well. Weber State used just eight players in the game, and four scored at least 13 points.

The Wildcats led for 31 minutes of clock. After Sacramento State used a 20-7 run midway through the second half to get within five points (50-45) of the Wildcat lead, Weber State responded with a 23-10 run to take control of the game and cruise to the win. The 20-point margin of victory was also the Wildcats' largest lead of the evening.

Sacramento State's 17 assists were its most of the season against a Div. I team, and the four turnovers were easily a season low, surpassing the previous mark of eight.

Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by Bryce Fowler's 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes. He was joined by William FitzPatrick who scored 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting from distance, and Zach Chappell added 10 points, four rebounds, six assists and just one turnover in 36 minutes. Center Jonathan Komagum had 10 points and five boards. Komagum has now scored in double figures in back-to-back games after doing so once in his first 13 contests.

Cameron Wilbon, the Hornets' third leading scorer, did not play after halftime after suffering an ankle injury late in the first half. He finished with two points and a rebound in 14 minutes.

Sacramento State was playing the second leg of a three-game homestand, and the Hornets return to the Nest on Thursday vs. Northern Arizona at 7 p.m.
