WILBON'S BUCKET WITH 2.1 SECONDS REMAINING GIVES MEN'S HOOPS A 61-60 WIN OVER IDAHO STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Cameron Wilbon capped a career-high 19-point evening with the game winning bucket with 2.1 seconds left as Sacramento State slipped past Idaho State, 61-60, on Thursday evening at the Nest.

Things looked good after a Zach Chappell 3-pointer gave the Hornets a 59-53 lead with 2:38 to play. However, Idaho State immediately ripped off a 7-0 run to take a 60-59 lead with 1:05 to play. Both teams would exchange empty possessions until the Hornets took it over one last time with 10 seconds to play. Bryce Fowler, who finished with a career-high tying 10 assists, drove the lane with about five seconds to play and dished to Wilbon, who went up for a reverse layup.

Wilbon's shot clearly hit the glass before being blocked by Idaho State's Daxton Carr. The resulting goaltending call was made by the officials, allowing the Hornets to reclaim a 61-60 lead with 2.1 seconds left. Idaho State inbounded from its own baseline, but still got a pretty good look from 30 feet by Tarik Cool, but his shot hit back rim as final buzzer sounded.

The victory moved Sacramento State's record to 6-10 overall and 2-7 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets, who were playing at home for just the second time in the last 40 days, snapped a four-game losing streak. Three of the four losses during the slide were by five points or less. Sacramento State will get plenty of home cooking in the next three weeks, as today began a stretch of three straight, and five of the next six games, at home.

Idaho State, meanwhile, dropped its fifth straight while falling to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State is now 13-13 all-time when playing ISU at home.

No team led by more than 10 points the entire way as Sacramento State opened the game on a 10-0 run. The Hornets would hold an advantage the majority of the game as Idaho State led for just 1:42 of the contest. Tonight was a single digit game the final 36:40 as both teams battled back and forth.

Sacramento State shot 44% (22-50) from the field, 44% (7-16) from the 3-point line and 67% (10-15) from the free throw line. Two of those missed free throws were front end of 1-and-1 situations late in the second half. The Hornets had 16 assists compared to just 10 turnovers while also posting eight steals. Idaho State shot 50% (23-46) from the field, including 59% in the second half. The Bengals, however, shot just 4-for-16 (25%) from the 3-point line and 10-of-16 (63%) from the charity stripe.

All 61 of Sacramento State's points were scored by its starters. That included Wilbon's career-high 19 points (12 in the second half) on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He also added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and zero turnovers in 36 minutes.

Chappell had 16 points (4-for-8 from distance) and three steals in 33 minutes, and center Jonathan Komagum posted 10 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot. Though Fowler (Hornets' leading scorer) finished with just seven points, he filled up the stat sheet with six rebounds, two steals and a career-high tying 10 assists. Fowler's 10th assist came on the Wilbon game-winning bucket. William FitzPatrick, who was questionable to play because of an ankle injury, finished with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from the 3-point line in 36 minutes of action. All five starters were plus points in plus/minus.

For Idaho State, Malik Porter had 15 points and eight rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench. Cool added 14 points.

Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday when it hosts first-place Weber State at 7 p.m. The Hornets also have the following home dates over the next couple weeks - Feb. 3 vs. Northern Arizona; Feb. 10 vs. Northern Colorado; Feb. 12 vs. Southern Utah.
