MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS NAIL BITER IN OVERTIME AT IDAHO, 73-72

Box Score

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Sacramento State used a 17-4 run at the end of regulation to force overtime, but could muster just five points in the extra session, on the way to a 73-72 loss at Idaho on Saturday afternoon at the brand new ICCU Arena.

In reality, this game should have never gone to overtime as Sacramento State shot just 41% (7-17) from the free throw line. That included 2-for-6 in the second half. Despite the poor free throw shooting, and 11 first half turnovers, Sacramento State found itself in the game thanks to the team's top two scorers - Bryce Fowler and Zach Chappell.

Chappell was incredible, scoring a career-high 30 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from the 3-point line. He had 18 points in the second half to spark the Hornets' comeback, and at one point, scored 14 straight Sacramento State points in the second session.

Fowler had just seven points before halftime, but came alive after the break, notching 10 second half points and accounting for all five of the Hornets' five tallies in overtime. That included fadeaway jumpers at the 1:12 and 0:23 marks of regulation to force the extra session. The shot at the 23-second mark were the final points of a 17-4 run that spanned the final 8:12 of regulation.

However, Sacramento State went ice cold in overtime, shooting just 2-for-10 from the field, and 0-for-2 from the 3-point line. The Hornets had five more field goal attempts than Idaho in the extra session, behind the strength of three offensive rebounds, but could not get over the hump. Trailing by one point with 12 seconds left, the Hornets had a chance to win, but Fowler's jumper and a Cameron Wilbon putback were both off the mark in the waning seconds.

Four of the last six meetings between the Hornets and Vandals in Moscow have now been decided by four points or less.

Idaho (4-14, 1-7) won its first Big Sky Conference game of the season, while the Hornets dropped to 5-9 and 1-6 in league play. Sacramento State has dropped three straight after an impressive 85-71 road win at Northern Colorado on Jan. 8.

The Hornets finished the game shooting 47% (29-62) from the field, 47% (7-15) from the 3-point line and 41% (7-17) from the free throw line. Amazingly, Sacramento State converted on the same amount of 3-pointers as free throws despite attempting two less shots from distance. The Hornets, who outscored the Vandals, 12-0, in second chance points, had just three turnovers after halftime after the 11 first-half miscues.

Idaho shot 47% (28-60) from the field, 40% (10-25) from the 3-point line and 70% (7-10) from the free throw line. Sacramento State had a 40-35 edge in the rebounding department, including 10 offensive boards.

Chappell (30), Fowler (22) and Teiano Hardee (12) combined for 64 of Sacramento State's 72 points. Hardee scored eight of those points in the second half. Wilbon, who had scored in double figures in four straight games, was limited to two points and five rebounds. Jonathan Komagum was held scoreless, but had a career-high tying 12 rebounds. Rick Barros III scored his first career points in a Sacramento State uniform, finishing with four points and a pair of boards.

William FitzPatrick, the team's top 3-point shooting threat, left the game at the 18:39 mark of the second half with an ankle injury, and did not return.

Today marked the second leg of a stretch that will see the Hornets play three road games over a five-day span. That includes Monday at Northern Arizona at 5 p.m. PST.
